This coming Sunday we will be celebrating the ordination of Mike Seaver and Nick Swan. There is certainly much to celebrate ABOUT these two fine young men. This day is the culmination of much hard work on their part. The hard work of cultivating Godly character so that they might qualify for pastoral ministry. The hard work of study so that they might be equipped to “rightly handle the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). The hard work they have put in to prove their gifting and calling as they have served at Crossway these past 14 months. Most importantly, we celebrate how they have appropriated the grace of God without which none of their hard work would have been possible.
But there is also much to celebrate WITH them, for this ordination is not only about God’s grace to them but to us as well. Let me explain. In Matthew 16:18 Jesus promised that he would build His church. We find one manifestation of that promise in Ephesians chapter 4.
Ephesians 4:8 Therefore it says, When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men…
Ephesians 4:11-13 And he gave…the pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.
As we ordain Mike and Nick let us be aware that they are manifestations of God’s goodness to Crossway, gifts to us from our ascended Savior to help build this local church; to help equip us for ministry; to help us attain unity and knowledge; to help us to maturity. May our hearts be full of joy as we contemplate yet another instance of God’s lavish grace to us in the form of these men. And may our hearts be full of fresh faith for the future as we recognize how Jesus continues to be at work in our midst.
Can’t wait to celebrate together on Sunday!
